Every penny counts. When you have a tight budget for your print campaign, it’s essential to work with a printer who can give you the result you want while keeping costs low.

Case Study

Founded in 1886, Mayhew Animal Home is an animal welfare organisation that helps thousands of abandoned or abused dogs and cats find new homes. As a charity, it constantly needs to find ways of increasing awareness of its work and raise funds.

Mayhew Animal Home wanted to refresh its annual report and potentially turn it into a promotional tool. Traditionally the report was a plain-looking 22-page mono A4 document. Mayhew Animal Home hoped that by adding articles on its work, latest news, success stories and photographs of animals it had rescued the revised report could be used to gain donations.

Managing colour print costs

After discussing the objective, Print Worx’s creative team devised a new concept that would make the report appear more engaging than a dry end of year summary.

First we switched the size to A5 and increased the length to 48 pages to include all the additional content. To keep costs to a minimum, we advised Mayhew Animal Home against printing the financial figures on a different type of paper. Instead, we changed the background to a slightly different shade to help them stand out. We also used tinted colours to separate the sections and make it easier to navigate and skim through.

Designed to get donations

The cover was printed on a bold 250 gsm gloss board, with the outer section gloss laminated, making it more durable and easy to wipe clean. The entire report was perfect bound to give it a formal, ‘worth keeping’ feel, and 2,000 copies were printed.

In addition, Mayhew Animal Home asked us to print 12,000 copies of its 28 page quarterly A4 newsletter in full colour on 130 gsm gloss paper. This was then mailed with a personalised covering letter in a clear, biodegradable polythene bag, ink jetted with the recipient’s details. A freepost reply envelope was included to encourage recipients to give a donation.

A report that found many new homes

Both the annual report and newsletter were delivered at the height of the UK recession, a time when few people had disposable income to donate to charities. However, Mayhew Animal Home’s trustees reported a year later that the donations gained as a result of the campaign were higher than they’d ever expected.

Mayhew Animal Home’s Caroline Yates said, “We are extremely pleased that despite the current economic climate, the charity’s incoming resources include legacies and donations totalled over £1.1m.”
